The haloform reaction is a way to make new chemicals.

Haloform Reaction Scheme
Haloform Reaction Scheme

This reaction happens when a base is mixed with certain groups of atoms. One group used is called an acetyl group. The reaction can make things called haloforms. These include chloroform, bromoform, and iodoform.

To make these, a halogen is added to the mix. A halogen is a type of element like chlorine or iodine. The reaction follows a set of steps. First, the halogen changes in the presence of hydroxide. If a certain kind of alcohol is there, it turns into a ketone. A ketone is a type of molecule. Next, the halogen attaches to the molecule. This happens in three steps. Finally, the haloform is formed.

Scientists use a version of this called the iodoform test. They mix iodine and sodium hydroxide. If the test works, a solid called iodoform forms. This makes the liquid look cloudy.

This reaction is very old. Georges-Simon Serullas found a way to make iodoform in 1822. Later, Adolf Lieben studied it in 1870. This is why some call it the Lieben reaction.
