Making a film is a big job with many steps. Van Sant started his career by directing television commercials in the Pacific Northwest. Later, he moved to New York to work at an advertising agency. He saved $20,000 from that job to help pay for his first big movie. This movie was called Mala Noche, and it was shot in black-and-white. He also writes the scripts, which are the written plans for the actors. Sometimes he uses improvisation, where actors make up their own lines as they go. This helps the scenes feel more real and natural.

Van Sant grew up in Louisville, Kentucky. His father, Gus Green Van Sant Sr., was a clothing manufacturer and salesman. Because of his father's job, the family moved to many different places during his childhood. His family name comes from a Dutch name, Van Zandt. When he was in school, he loved making small films using Super-8 cameras. These early films cost only about 30 to 50 dollars to make. Later, he went to the Rhode Island School of Design. He started by studying painting but changed his major to cinema.
