He was very tall and handsome. He joined the military by passing a special test. He soon became a leader in the Tang Empire.

In 755, a large rebellion began. This was a very hard time for the country. Guo Ziyi led his men to protect a key pass. He used smart plans to win battles. He once used only ten thousand men to slow down a much larger army. This gave his friends time to arrive and help.

Because of his work, the rebels were finally defeated.

Later, a group from the Tibetan Empire tried to attack. They sent a huge force of 100,000 people. Guo Ziyi did not want a bloody fight. He sent scouts to light many fires. He also told people in the city to strike gongs. The enemy saw the lights and heard the noise. They thought a giant army was coming. They got scared and ran away. This was a great victory with no loss of life.
