Guo learned a lot from his grandfather. As a young man, he improved water clocks. These clocks used dripping water to tell time. He also worked with water to help people. He built long channels to bring water to cities. He even made Kunming Lake in Beijing. This lake helped people grow food and move grain.

Guo also built tools to study the sky. He made a gnomon to measure the sun. He also made an armilla. This is a tool used to find the position of stars. He and his team built 27 observatories. They used these to make a new calendar. In 1280, he finished this calendar. It was very accurate. It told the length of a year almost perfectly. This calendar was used for 363 years. People even named an asteroid after him. He was a great leader in science.
