Gunnar Ekelöf was a famous poet from Sweden. He was born in Stockholm in 1907. Many people call him Sweden's first surrealist poet. Surrealism is a style that uses strange and dream-like images.

His first book was called Sent på jorden. It was written while he lived in Paris. This book was very different from other poems. It did not use capital letters. Later, he wrote a book called Färjesång. This book used simple words. It helped him become very famous. It even changed how other people wrote poetry.

Ekelöf loved to travel. A trip to Turkey changed his life. He wrote a trilogy of books about this trip. One book tells a story about a prince. This work won him the Nordic Council Literature Prize in 1966.

In 1958, he joined the Swedish Academy. This is a very important group for writers. He also earned a special degree from Uppsala University. When he died in 1968, his ashes were sent to Turkey. They were scattered in a river there. People still gather to honor his work today.
