Group dynamics

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

People act in special ways when they are in a group. This study is called group dynamics. It looks at how people act within a group. It also looks at how different groups act toward each other. Scientists use this to study many things. They study how ideas spread. They also study how diseases move through a town.

Long ago, thinkers noticed something important. They saw that a group is more than just one person. A group has its own special rules. In 1924, Max Wertheimer shared this idea. He said the whole group is different from its parts. Later, Kurt Lewin used the term group dynamics. He studied how people react to changes. He started a research center at MIT in 1945.

Groups often go through stages. Bruce Tuckman said groups have four main steps. First, people act polite in the forming stage. Next, they might argue in the storming stage. Then, they build trust in the norming stage. Finally, they work well in the performing stage. Some groups even have a fifth stage. This is when the group ends. This is called adjourning.
