Group 6 element

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Group 6 is a special family of elements in the periodic table. This group includes four different metals: chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, and seaborgium. Most of these are transition metals, which are a large group of metals with unique properties. Chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten are also known as refractory metals. These metals are very good at handling heat. This makes them useful for many different jobs.

These metals work in many ways to help us. Chromium can be used to make paints or used in tanning salts. It is also used for electroplating, which makes things look shiny. Molybdenum helps make steel much harder. It can also be used as a heating element in very hot furnaces. Tungsten is famous because it has the highest melting point of all metals. This means it stays solid even when it gets incredibly hot.

Scientists discovered these elements at different times in history. Johann Gottlob Lehmann first found chromium in 1761 in the Ural Mountains of Russia. Later, Louis Nicolas Vauquelin found metallic chromium in 1798. Carl Wilhelm Scheele discovered molybdenum was a new element in 1778. He was a Swedish chemist who worked with many different minerals. In 1803, two brothers named José and Fausto Elhuyar isolated tungsten in Spain. Finally, seaborgium was created much later in 1974 by Albert Ghiorso and his team.

Each metal comes from different places and has its own numbers. Chromium is the 21st most common element in the Earth's crust. Much of the world's chromium comes from South Africa. Molybdenum is the 54th most common element in the Earth's crust. About 200,000 tonnes of molybdenum are produced every year. Tungsten is found in minerals like wolframite and scheelite. The largest producer of tungsten is China, which produces 1,800,000 tonnes. Seaborgium is a synthetic element, so it is not found in nature.

You can see these elements working in things you know. A tiny bit of chromium is what makes a ruby look bright red. You might see chromium used to make metal parts look shiny and new. Molybdenum helps make the thin wires inside light bulbs work. Tungsten is used in many tools that must face extreme heat. Seaborgium is different because scientists must make it in a lab. They create it by hitting atoms with other tiny particles.
