Groin

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The groin is a vital junction in human anatomy. It is also known as the inguinal region or the iliac region. This area marks where the lower abdominal wall meets the thigh. You can find it at the front of the body. It sits on either side of a point called the pubic tubercle. A physical fold forms at this junction. This crease is known as the inguinal groove.

Inside this region, several muscles work together to move the legs. These are the adductor muscles of the hip. They are often called the groin muscles. Their main job is to adduct the thigh. Adduction means moving the thigh and knee closer to the midline of the body. Five specific muscles make up this group. These include the adductor brevis and the adductor longus. There is also the adductor magnus, the gracilis, and the pectineus.

Nerves control these muscles through a system called innervation. The groin is innervated by various branches of the lumbar plexus. This is a network of nerves in the lower back. The pectineus muscle receives signals from the femoral nerve. The adductor magnus has a hamstring portion. This specific part is innervated by the tibial nerve. Because the groin is a flexion surface, nerves and blood vessels pass close to the skin. This makes them relatively superficial, or near the surface.

The immune system also relies on this area. Underneath the skin, there are three to five deep inguinal lymph nodes. These nodes help the body fight illness. A chain of superficial inguinal lymph nodes drains into these deep nodes. Sometimes these nodes can become swollen. This most commonly happens due to a simple infection. In less common cases, swelling can be caused by cancer.

Anatomists study specific shapes within the groin. There is an area known as the inguinal triangle. This triangle contains two depressions called fossae. These are the lateral inguinal fossa and the medial inguinal fossa. A key structure here is the inguinal ligament. It runs from the pubic tubercle to the anterior superior iliac spine. This ligament is very important during hernia operations.

Medical issues often occur in this region. A "pulled groin" is usually a painful strain of the hip adductor muscles. This injury is often linked to overuse or previous injuries. The groin is also a common site for a hernia. A hernia occurs when something pushes through a weak spot. These can be classified as direct hernias or indirect hernias. Sometimes, both types appear on the same side. This specific condition is called a saddlebag hernia.

Doctors use the groin for important medical procedures. During a venography, which is a way to look at veins, the groin is a preferred site. Doctors may make an incision here to insert a catheter. This allows them to enter the vascular system. The groin is similar to other flexion surfaces like the armpit or the neck. In these areas, blood vessels and nerves are easy to reach. This makes the groin a useful location for many clinical tasks.
