The studio helped her with English lessons and other training.

Her life started in a very different way than her life in Hollywood. She was born Greta Lovisa Gustafsson in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1905.

Her family was quite poor and lived in a small apartment. Her father was a laborer who worked many different jobs. When she was fourteen, her father passed away. As a young girl, she was a shy daydreamer. She loved to play pretend and lead her friends in games. She even dreamed of being an actress even then.

Garbo became a massive star during the silent film era. Her third American movie, Flesh and the Devil, made her famous all over the world.
