Many people call him the greatest American diver ever. He reached the top of his sport during the 1980s. He won gold medals at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. He also won gold medals at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. He was the only man to win both the springboard and platform events in two games in a row. This is a very rare and amazing feat in Olympic history.

His path to the pool started with many different movements. As a young child, he took dance and gymnastics classes. He even practiced acrobatics when he was very small. These classes helped him learn how to move his body with grace. Later, he began diving lessons at age nine. He also studied drama and theater in college. He attended the University of California, Irvine, and graduated in 1983. These skills in dance and theater helped him become a master in the air.

His diving career was full of big moments and hard work. At age 16, he competed in the 1976 Montreal Olympics. He placed second in the tower event behind Klaus Dibiasi. Later, a coach named Sammy Lee helped him improve his skills. In 1982, he became the first diver to get a perfect score of 10 from all seven judges. During the 1988 Olympics, he hit his head on the springboard. This caused a concussion, which is a type of brain injury. Even with this injury, he finished his dives and won gold.
