Many people call him the father of modern dentistry. He was born in 1836 near Winchester, Illinois. As a young boy, he lived on a farm. He loved to study the natural world.

Black did a lot of research to help teeth. He studied how to fix cavities. He used engineering to make fillings stay in place. He even made a dental drill that used a foot pedal.

Black also found a great way to mix amalgam. Amalgam is a metal used for fillings. His mix was used as a top standard for 70 years.

He created a system to group tooth decay. This is called Black's Classification of Caries Lesions. Doctors still use his list today. He also taught at the University of Iowa and in Chicago. He was the second Dean at Northwestern University Dental School. Black died in 1915 at the age of 79. A statue of him stands in Lincoln Park in Chicago.
