A round lake sits in the center. We call it Lake Drummond. It is a natural freshwater lake. A long canal runs along the eastern edge.

The Dismal Swamp Canal is 22 miles long. It was finished in 1805. It helps boats move between places.

Many people have lived here. Native American tribes lived in the swamp for a long time. Later, many Black people escaped to the swamp. They were called maroons. They found safety and a home in the trees.

Today, the swamp is a protected refuge. It has many trees like bald cypress. Many animals live there too. You might see a black bear.
