A gravestone is a marker for a grave.

People use them to remember and honor those who have died. Most markers are made of stone. Some stand up tall at the head of a grave. We call these headstones. Others lay flat on the ground.

Many materials can be used for these markers. Granite is a very hard stone. It lasts a long time. Marble and limestone are also popular. They are light in color and easy to carve. However, acid in rain can slowly wear them away.

Sandstone is soft and easy to carve. Slate is another choice that takes lettering well. Some people use metal, like iron crosses. Others use wood. In Hungary, people use a carved wooden marker called a kopjafa.

Markers often have writing on them. This is called an inscription. They usually show a name and dates. Some stones also have prayers or poems.

Some modern stones even have a frame for a photo. These help families feel close to their loved ones.
