Grand unification epoch

space Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The universe has a very long history. One part of this history is called the grand unification epoch. This period happened very early after the Big Bang. It sits between the Planck epoch and the era of inflation. Scientists do not understand this time very well yet. It is a mysterious part of how our world began.

During this time, the universe worked in a unique way. Three forces were joined into one single force. This was called the electronuclear force. It included electromagnetism and the strong and weak interactions. Gravity had already split away before this era began. This era lasted from 10^-43 seconds to 10^-35 seconds. The temperature was incredibly high during this short time.

Scientists use theories to study these old times. These are called grand unified theories. They try to explain how the forces worked together. These theories use a measurement called GeV for energy. If the energy was 10^15 GeV, the heat was huge. This heat was higher than 10^27 K. However, these theories do not match modern observations yet.

Many things were different during this epoch. Physical traits like mass and charge did not matter. Even things like flavor and color charge had no meaning. The epoch ended around 10^-36 seconds after the Big Bang. At this point, the strong force separated from the others. This change is known as a phase transition. This transition might have helped create more matter than antimatter.

This era connects many big ideas in science. The end of this time may have started cosmic inflation. Inflation is when the universe grows very fast. This growth shaped how the universe developed later. It also relates to a process called baryogenesis. That is how matter became more common than antimatter. We are still learning how these pieces fit together.
