Grand unification epoch

space Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The universe started with the Big Bang. After that, a special time began. We call this the grand unification epoch. This time happened very fast. It lasted from 10^-43 seconds to 10^-35 seconds. During this time, the universe was very hot. It was hotter than 10^27 K. K stands for Kelvin, a way to measure heat.

At this time, forces were joined together. Three forces acted as one. We call this the electronuclear force. These forces were the strong force, the weak force, and electromagnetism. Gravity had already split away before this.

In this era, things were very different. Mass and charge did not matter. Even things like color charge had no meaning. Then, the era ended near 10^-36 seconds. The strong force split away from the others. This change might have made more matter than antimatter. This change also helped start cosmic inflation. Inflation is when the universe grows very fast. Scientists are still studying this time. It is still a mystery to us.
