It can be a tall tower. It can also be a whole group of buildings. These buildings help move large amounts of loose grain.

In the past, people moved grain in bags. This was very slow work. In 1842, Joseph Dart and Robert Dunbar changed this. They made a tool called a marine leg. This tool used steam power to scoop grain. It lifted grain from ships to a tall tower. This way worked seven times faster than before.

Today, elevators use different parts to move grain. A bucket elevator uses buckets to lift grain up. Then, the grain falls into big tanks called silos. These silos are often made of steel or concrete.

To empty them, grain can fall using gravity. It can also move through tools called augers. This grain is then put into trucks or ships.
