Grading in education

society Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Teachers use grades to measure how students learn. Grades can be letters like A to F. They can also be numbers or percentages. Every country uses a different system.

In some places, schools use a GPA. This stands for grade point average. It is a way to find an average score. Students use this to get into college. A high GPA can also help a student get money for school. Some studies show that a high GPA can lead to a higher income later in life.

Grading has a long history. People checked student work in 500 B.C. In the year 1785, a leader at Yale University used words to grade students. By 1837, Yale used a 4-point scale of numbers. This may be how the modern GPA scale began.

Some people think grades are not always fair. They say grades might not show a student's true talent. Grades can cause stress or pressure for kids and parents. Because of this, some schools try new ways to learn. They use methods that do not use traditional grades.
