People affectionately called her "Our Gracie" or the "Lancashire Lass." She was born in the mill town of Rochdale in 1898. She never lost her strong, native Lancashire accent. This helped people feel a special connection to her. During the 1930s, she was one of the top ten film stars in Britain. In 1937, she was even the highest paid film star in the world. She was a true star of both the cinema and the music hall.

Gracie's journey to fame started with small steps. As a child, she joined groups like "Haley's Garden of Girls." She worked as a half-timer in a local cotton mill. This meant she spent half her week at school and half at work. In 1910, she made her professional debut at the Rochdale Hippodrome. Later, she met Archie Pitt, who became her manager and husband. They toured Britain together in shows like "It's A Bargain!" and "Mr Tower of London." These shows helped her reach the famous West End in London.

Her career grew very fast through music and movies.

She was a very successful recording artist for the label His Master's Voice. Her first record, "My Blue Heaven," sold 500,000 copies in 1928. By 1933, she had sold four million records. Her famous song "Sally" became her theme after her 1931 film. She also moved to Hollywood to make films in the United States. She earned a record fee of £200,000 for four movies there.

Gracie used her success to help many people in need. In 1933, she started the Gracie Fields Children's Home and Orphanage in Sussex. This home helped children of people working in the theatre. She also helped the Rochdale Association Football Club when they struggled with money. During World War II, she joined the ENSA to entertain troops.

In her later years, Gracie lived on the beautiful Isle of Capri. She lived in a home called "La Canzone Del Mare," which means "The Song of the Sea." Many famous Hollywood stars visited her there. She continued to work on radio and television for many years. In 1956, she was the first actress to play Miss Marple on a screen. She remained a beloved figure until she passed away in 1979. Her life showed how much joy a single voice can bring to the world.
