She spent sixty years performing on stages for many different people. During her career, she played more than 100 different roles in many plays. She was most famous for her work in the West End, which is a famous area for theater in London. She also acted in many films throughout her life. People loved her because she could play so many different kinds of characters. She was known for being a very talented and skilled performer.

Evans was able to change how she acted to fit any person. She was very good at playing proud and rich women. One of her most famous roles was Lady Bracknell in the play The Importance of Being Earnest. She had a special way of saying the line "A handbag" that people still remember today. However, she could also play characters that were not rich or proud. She played a poor maid in The Late Christopher Bean in 1933. She also played a kind Nurse in the play Romeo and Juliet. She performed that role four times between 1926 and 1961.

Before she became a star, Evans had a very different job. She was born in Pimlico, London, in 1888. When she was 15 years old, she became an apprentice milliner. A milliner is a person who makes and sells hats. She loved working with beautiful and rich fabrics to make them. While she worked in a shop, she began taking drama classes. She joined a group called the Streatham Shakespeare Players. Her very first time on a stage was in October 1910.

Her path to becoming a professional actress happened quite quickly. In 1912, a producer named William Poel saw her perform. He gave her her first professional job in Cambridge that August. She played a part in a classic play called Sakuntala. Later, she made her West End debut in 1913. She was even praised for her work in a very small part. Critics said she put more effort into her few minutes than many stars. She became a huge success in the play The Laughing Lady in 1922.

Evans stayed true to herself throughout her whole life. She once said she had a great passion for the truth. This meant she only played characters she could truly understand. She refused to play some famous roles, like Lady Macbeth, because she did not feel she could play them. She also traveled to entertain troops during the Second World War. She visited places like Gibraltar, Europe, and India to perform for them.
