She achieved significant stardom in Hollywood during the early and mid-1950s. After her marriage to Prince Rainier III, she transitioned from film to royal duties. Grace was born on November 12, 1929, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She grew up in an affluent and influential Catholic household.

Her father, John B. Kelly Sr., was an Olympic gold medalist in sculling. He also owned a successful brickwork contracting company. Her mother, Margaret Majer, was a physical education teacher and a former model. This background provided a foundation of discipline and public service. Grace grew up in the close-knit community of East Falls.

To build her career, Grace followed a disciplined path of training and performance. She graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1949. She often practiced her speech using a tape recorder to improve her delivery. Her early work included Broadway theater and live television programs. She also worked as a model for the John Robert Powers agency.

Her film career reached new heights through several key stages and collaborations. In 1952, she played a Quaker bride in the Western film High Noon. This role helped establish her as a major star. In 1953, she starred in the adventure-romance Mogambo, filmed in Nairobi, Africa.

This performance earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress. She later collaborated with director Alfred Hitchcock on three famous suspense thrillers. These included Dial M for Murder, Rear Window, and To Catch a Thief.

Her life shifted from the spotlight of Hollywood to the formal responsibilities of a royal house. This transition marked the end of her film career and the start of her public service.

Grace dedicated much of her later life to significant charitable causes. She established the Princess Grace Foundation in 1964 to support local artisans. She also led AMADE Mondiale, an organization focused on children's rights. This group gained consultive status with international bodies like UNICEF and UNESCO. Her work focused heavily on supporting the arts and protecting young children. Even her final film role was a narration for a documentary about theater children.

Tragically, Grace died at the age of 52 in 1982. She passed away at the Monaco Hospital due to injuries from a car crash. Her legacy continues through the work of her children and various honors. In 1984, Prince Albert helped establish the Princess Grace Awards. These awards recognize emerging performers in film, theater, and dance. Her influence remains visible in both the history of cinema and the traditions of Monaco.
