A governor is a leader of a region. They help run a specific part of a country. Some governors are elected by the people. Others are chosen by a higher leader. Their powers change based on local laws.

In ancient Egypt, leaders called nomarchs ruled small areas. At first, the pharaoh picked them. Later, the job stayed in families. In ancient Persia, leaders were called satraps.

Roman governors had many jobs. They acted as judges. They also managed taxes and spending. Some even led armies. The first emperor, Augustus, changed how they worked. He sent deputies to help them. One famous deputy was Pontius Pilate.

Today, the role can be very different. In Australia, state governors are ceremonial leaders. They represent the king or queen. They do not make political choices. In Canada, the governor general represents the king at a federal level. In some places, like Gibraltar, a governor might have a special flag.
