Gothenburg is the second-largest city in Sweden, following the capital, Stockholm.

It is also the fifth-largest city in the Nordic countries. The city is located on Sweden's west coast, positioned between the Danish province of Halland to the south and the Norwegian province of Bohuslän to the north.

Gothenburg sits at the mouth of the Göta älv, which is a major river. This river flows into the Kattegat, an arm of the North Sea. Because of this strategic location, the Port of Gothenburg has become the largest port in the Nordic countries. The city serves as the gubernatorial seat for Västra Götaland County.

The city was founded by royal charter in 1621 by King Gustavus Adolphus.

Before this, a previous city had been founded in 1604, but it burned down in 1611. The King wanted to create a heavily fortified trading colony on the western coast. To achieve this, he provided generous privileges to his Dutch allies. These included tax relaxation to encourage settlement. He also attracted many German and Scottish allies to populate the new town. During this time, the city was heavily influenced by Dutch, German, and Scottish culture. In fact, the city council in 1641 included members from all three of these groups.

Dutch engineers and planners played a vital role in the early development of the city. They possessed the specific skills needed to drain and build on the marshy land chosen for the site. The town was designed to resemble Dutch cities like Amsterdam or Batavia.

This design included a system of streets and canals. For a long time, the Dutch held significant political power in the city. They even proposed Dutch as the official language. It was not until 1652, after the death of the last Dutch politician on the council, that Swedes gained political control. During the 17th century, the city was protected by robust walls. Most of these walls were eventually torn down starting in 1810.

In the 18th century, the city's economy shifted through international trade. While fishing was once the most important industry, the founding of the Swedish East India Company in 1731 changed everything.

The company organized highly profitable commercial expeditions to China. This caused the city to flourish as a major trade center. The harbor became Sweden's primary gateway for trade moving toward the west. Gothenburg also became the main departure point for Swedish emigrants traveling to the United States. This historical connection is even reflected in the name of Gothenburg, Nebraska, in the U.S.

By the 19th and 20th centuries, Gothenburg evolved into a modern industrial powerhouse. The population grew significantly during this era. In 1800, the population was only 13,000 people. By 1900, the population had increased tenfold to 130,000.

This industrial growth led to the founding of several major global companies. Volvo was founded in Gothenburg in 1927. Today, both Volvo Cars and the Volvo Group are headquartered on the island of Hisingen. Other important companies in the region include SKF, AstraZeneca, Ericsson, and the shipbuilding company Götaverken.

The city is also a major center for education and culture. It is home to the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology.

These institutions attract many students to the area. Gothenburg is famous for hosting massive international events. The Gothia Cup is the world's largest youth football tournament.

The city also hosts the Göteborg Basketball Festival, which is Europe's largest youth basketball tournament. For film lovers, the Gothenburg Film Festival has been a leading Scandinavian event since 1979. It attracts more than 155,000 visitors every year. In the summer, the city comes alive with music festivals like Way Out West.

Nature and climate play a significant role in the life of the city. Despite its northern latitude, Gothenburg has a mild oceanic climate.

This is due to the moderating influence of the Gulf Stream. This makes the temperatures warmer than other places at similar latitudes, such as Stockholm. The city features many green spaces, including the Gothenburg Botanical Garden.

Another popular spot is Slottsskogen, a large park that contains a free zoo. This zoo includes animals like harbor seals, penguins, and moose. The surrounding archipelago consists of rough, barren rocks and cliffs, which are typical for the Bohuslän coast.
