He was born on February 20, 1951, in a place called Giffnock. His father was a minister for the Church of Scotland. Growing up, Brown loved to study history. He went to the University of Edinburgh to learn more. He even earned a PhD in history later on. During his school years, he had a hard time with his eyes. A rugby match left him blind in one eye. Later, a tennis match affected his other eye too. A surgeon named Hector Chawla helped save his sight.

Before he led the country, Brown had many jobs. He worked as a teacher at a college. He also worked as a journalist for television. In 1983, he was elected to Parliament. This means he was chosen to help make laws. He represented a place called Dunfermline East for many years. He worked closely with another leader named Tony Blair. In 2010, a new government took over from his party.

Even after leaving his big jobs, Brown stayed very active.
