Gold dredging technology spread to many different countries. In New Zealand, a man named Choie Sew Hoy made a successful bucket dredge in 1889. This design helped gold mining grow in places like the Shotover River. Another man, Charles Lancelot Garland, brought this technology to Australia in March 1899. In the 1930s, the technology even reached New Guinea. Because there were no roads, people had to carry parts of the dredges by air. Today, large dredges still work in places like Russia, China, and South America.

Modern dredging is different than it was in the past. Some dredges are now small enough for one person to carry. These small machines can reach remote streams that giant ships could not visit. There are also floating dredges that use a vacuum to suck up gravel. In the Klondike, a miner named Tony Beets even rebuilt a 70-year-old dredge. This shows how these machines have changed over time. Once the buckets are full, they dump the material into a rotating steel cylinder. This cylinder is a specific type of trommel known as a screen. The screen is sloped downward toward a rubber belt called a stacker. The screen has many small holes designed to sort the material by size. For example, a screen might have 3/4 inch holes to catch larger debris.

As the material moves through the rotating screen, water is used to wash it. Small particles, including the heavy gold, fall through the holes in the screen. These tiny particles land in a sluice box for collection. The larger rocks that cannot fit through the holes are moved by the stacker. The stacker carries this oversize material and dumps it behind the dredge.
