Gneiss

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Gneiss is a common type of metamorphic rock. Metamorphic rocks are made when other rocks change deep underground. This change happens because of great heat and heavy pressure. The heat can be over 300 °C. The pressure is also very strong.

Gneiss often has stripes. Scientists call these stripes gneissic banding. The bands are dark and light colors. Dark bands have minerals with iron and magnesium. Light bands have minerals like quartz.

These bands form when the rock is squeezed. It can be squeezed in one direction. This acts like a sliding force. It is like pushing the top of a deck of cards. This force stretches the rock into sheets.

Some gneiss looks like it has eyes. This is called augen gneiss. The "eyes" are large grains of feldspar. These grains stay tough while the rest of the rock changes around them. Some gneiss is very old. The Acasta Gneiss is one of the oldest rocks on Earth. It is about 4 billion years old!
