He moved from bikes to powerful engines very quickly. In 1902, he began making his own motorcycle engines. He once used a tomato soup can to make a carburetor. Born in 1878 in Hammondsport, New York, Curtiss showed an early talent for mechanics. He worked at the Eastman Dry Plate and Film Company in Rochester. There, he invented a stencil machine to speed up production. This device used a hinged brush to stencil one hundred strips at once. His invention increased the factory's throughput by ten times. This early success showed his ability to improve complex mechanical processes.

Before he took to the skies, Curtiss mastered the world of two-wheeled vehicles. He began as a bicycle racer and a messenger for Western Union. In 1901, he transitioned to motorcycles as internal-combustion engines became more common. He even built a primitive carburetor using a tomato soup can and a gauze screen. This screen used capillary action to pull gasoline into the engine. By 1907, he had designed a powerful V-8 engine. He used this engine to set an unofficial world speed record in Ormond Beach, Florida.

Curtiss's move into aviation was driven by his expertise in engine design. In 1907, Alexander Graham Bell invited him to join the Aerial Experiment Association (AEA). Bell considered Curtiss the greatest motor expert in the country. The AEA was a research group dedicated to building heavier-than-air flying machines. Between 1908 and 1910, the group produced four different aircraft. Curtiss designed the third aircraft, known as the June Bug.

On July 4, 1908, he flew the June Bug for nearly a mile. This was the first pre-announced public flight of a heavier-than-air machine in North America.

His success in the air led to international fame and significant prizes. In 1909, Curtiss traveled to France for the Grande Semaine d'Aviation de la Champagne. This was the world's first international air meet. Flying his No. 2 biplane, he won the Gordon Bennett Cup.

He completed the 20-kilometer course in under 16 minutes. This victory made him a global leader in aviation speed. In 1910, he achieved another milestone by flying from Albany to New York City. This was the first long-distance flight between major U.S. cities. He won a $10,000 prize and the Scientific American Trophy for this feat.

Curtiss was also a vital inventor who improved how aircraft maneuver. He helped develop ailerons, which are surfaces on the wings used to control a plane's roll. These innovations led to the formation of the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company. This company later merged to become the Curtiss-Wright Corporation. His business grew as he provided aircraft for the U.S. Army and Navy. He also faced legal challenges during this era. The Wright Brothers filed several patent lawsuits against him. These disputes lasted until World War I, when the government pressured both companies to settle.

His work fundamentally changed naval aviation through the development of seaplanes. During a winter encampment in San Diego, Curtiss developed a float design. These floats, or pontoons, allowed aircraft to take off from and land on water.

On January 26, 1911, he flew the first seaplane from water in the United States. This technology proved essential for maritime operations. In November 1910, pilot Eugene Ely demonstrated the potential of naval flight. He took off from a platform on the cruiser USS Birmingham.

Beyond his mechanical inventions, Curtiss influenced military training and culture. He established the first military aviation school in San Diego. His students included the first U.S. Naval Aviator, Theodore Ellyson. The aircraft produced by his company remained vital through the interwar years and World War II. Even fictional characters like Tom Swift were said to be based on him. Glenn Curtiss left a legacy that connects the early days of motor racing to the modern era of flight.
