Glengarry Glen Ross is a famous stage play written by David Mamet. It is a two-act tragedy about life in Chicago. The story follows four real estate agents who are very desperate. They are willing to do many bad things to succeed. These acts include lying, bribery, and even burglary. The play looks at big ideas like morality and money.

The plot centers on a high-stakes sales contest at an office. The owners, Mitch and Murray, put a lot of pressure on the men. Only the top two salesmen will receive prizes. The others will lose their jobs. This makes the characters act in ways that are not honest. Some men try to steal sales leads to help themselves. Others use smooth words to trick people into buying land.

David Mamet wrote the play in the early 1980s. It first premiered at the Cottesloe Theatre in London on September 21, 1983. The show was directed by Bill Bryden. Later, it moved to Broadway at the John Golden Theatre on March 25, 1984. The play was a huge success for the writer. Mamet won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for this work.

Many famous actors have brought these characters to life. Joe Mantegna won a Tony Award for playing Richard Roma. This character is a very talented but dishonest salesman. Another actor, Liev Schreiber, won a Tony for a 2005 revival. The play was also made into a movie in 1992. This film was directed by James Foley. It also featured a script written by Mamet.

This story connects to how people act under stress. It shows how the need for money can change a person. The names Glengarry Highlands and Glen Ross Farms come from real estate areas. These names are used often by the characters in the play. Even though it is an old play, people still perform it. It remains a famous way to study human nature.
