Campbell learned to play music in a very special way. He started playing guitar when he was only four years old. His father gave him a five-dollar guitar as a gift. He did not go to school to learn music notes. Instead, he practiced by listening to the radio and records. He could play the guitar, banjo, mandolin, and bass. Even when playing with huge orchestras, he did not need to read music. He could hear a song once and play it perfectly.

His musical journey began on a small farm in Arkansas. He was born in Billstown on April 22, 1936. His family lived a very simple life and grew crops like corn and cotton. Money was hard to find, so he picked cotton to help his family. He moved to Los Angeles in 1960 to work as a musician. He joined a famous group of studio players called the Wrecking Crew. He played on songs for stars like Elvis Presley and the Beach Boys.

Campbell earned many important awards for his hard work. In 1967, he won four Grammy Awards for his music. Some of his most famous songs include "Gentle on My Mind" and "Wichita Lineman." He also sang the song "Rhinestone Cowboy," which became a huge hit. He was even nominated for a Golden Globe for his acting in the movie True Grit. He won many trophies for being a top singer in country music. His talent helped him reach many different types of listeners.

In his later years, Campbell faced a difficult health challenge. He told the public in 2011 that he had Alzheimer's disease. This is a sickness that affects how the brain works. He decided to retire from music in 2013. His final song was called "I'm Not Gonna Miss You." He passed away on August 8, 2017, at the age of 81. He left behind a huge legacy of music that people still enjoy today.
