He played a vital role in the Risorgimento, which was the movement for Italian unification. Through his military leadership, he helped create the Kingdom of Italy. Because of his massive influence, he is honored as one of the "fathers of the fatherland." This title places him alongside figures like King Victor Emmanuel II and Giuseppe Mazzini. He was also famously called the "Hero of the Two Worlds." This nickname recognized his significant military actions in both Europe and South America.

Garibaldi's early life was shaped by the sea and political change. He was born on July 4, 1807, in Nice, a city that was then part of the French Republic.

His family was involved in coastal trade, which drew him to a life on ships. Between 1828 and 1832, he lived in Istanbul within the Ottoman Empire. During this time, he worked as an instructor teaching mathematics, French, and Italian. While there, he connected with a network of Sardinian exiles. In 1833, he met the nationalist leader Giuseppe Mazzini in Genoa. Mazzini advocated for a liberal republic through social and political reform. Garibaldi joined the Young Italy movement, which sought to unite Italy under a democratic government.

After a failed insurrection in Piedmont in 1834, Garibaldi was sentenced to death. He escaped and fled to South America, beginning a fourteen-year exile.

In Brazil, he joined the Ragamuffins during the Ragamuffin War of 1835. He fought to establish the Riograndense and Catarinense Republics. During these conflicts, he met Anita, a skilled horsewoman who became his wife.

Anita fought alongside him in several battles, including those at Imbituba and Laguna. This period also taught Garibaldi the art of guerrilla warfare. This method involves using small, mobile groups to fight larger, traditional armies. He adopted the clothing of the South American gauchos, including a poncho and red shirt.

In 1841, Garibaldi moved to Montevideo, Uruguay. He worked as a schoolmaster and a trader before taking command of the Uruguayan fleet in 1842.

He raised an Italian Legion to fight in the Uruguayan Civil War. These soldiers became known as the Redshirts, named after the distinctive color of their shirts. Many of these volunteers came from the large Italian population living in Montevideo. At the time, 4,205 people in a city of 30,000 were Italian. During this era, Garibaldi also joined the Freemasons. He viewed the organization as a global network that united progressive men across different nations.

Garibaldi returned to Italy in 1848 to participate in the struggle for independence. He held several high-ranking military positions, including General of the Roman Republic in 1849.

Acting with the consent of King Victor Emmanuel II, his forces successfully annexed Sicily, Southern Italy, Marche, and Umbria. These victories led to the official creation of the Kingdom of Italy on March 17, 1861.

Even after unification, Garibaldi continued to be a figure of international importance. He served as the commander of the Army of the Vosges during the Franco-Prussian War.

Throughout his life, he balanced his republican ideals with the practical need for a unified nation. This required him to ally with monarchists like Camillo Benso di Cavour. His ability to work with different political factions helped ensure the success of the Risorgimento. He remained a symbol of national independence for many different people around the world.

Garibaldi's legacy is seen in both history books and modern culture. He was admired by many famous intellectuals, including Charles Dickens, Victor Hugo, and Abraham Lincoln.
