In Brazil, he joined the Ragamuffins during the Ragamuffin War of 1835. He fought to establish the Riograndense and Catarinense Republics. Garibaldi returned to Italy in 1848 to participate in the struggle for independence. He held several high-ranking military positions, including General of the Roman Republic in 1849.
