Born in 1778 in Chillán, Chile, he eventually became a founding father of the nation. He served as the second Supreme Director of Chile from 1817 to 1823. This role meant he was the first leader to head a fully independent Chilean state. Throughout his career, he held several high military titles. These included Captain General of the Chilean Army and Grand Marshal of Peru. His life was defined by his efforts to free Chile from Spanish rule during the Chilean War of Independence.

O'Higgins had a complex family background. He was the illegitimate son of Ambrosio O'Higgins, a Spanish officer from Ireland. His mother was Isabel Riquelme, a prominent woman from Chillán. Because his father was a junior officer at the time of his birth, Bernardo was raised by his mother's family. He later lived with the Albano family in Talca. At age 15, his father sent him to Lima for his education. Later, at age 17, he moved to London to complete his studies. In London, he studied history and the arts. He also joined the Lautaro Lodge, a group dedicated to Latin American independence. This group was separate from the Freemasons and supported the Catholic Church.

Political changes in Europe triggered the movement in South America. In 1808, Napoleon took control of Spain. This event caused many leaders in Chile to seek autonomy. On September 18, 1810, O'Higgins joined the revolt against the French-dominated Spanish government.

This date is now celebrated as Chile's Independence Day. O'Higgins helped push for a national congress and was elected a deputy in 1811. However, the movement was not united. There were deep divisions between royalists and those seeking independence. There were also internal fights between different patriot factions. One major rival was the Carrera family, led by José Miguel Carrera.

O'Higgins' military career began with significant challenges. He had little formal training and sometimes suffered from poor health. In 1813, when Spain attempted to reconquer Chile, O'Higgins mobilized a local militia. He won a victory at Linares, which earned him a promotion to colonel. During the Battle of El Roble, he showed great courage. He famously ordered his men to live with honor or die with glory. At one point, the Santiago government gave him command of the army. However, political tension with the Carreras remained high. In 1814, O'Higgins supported the Treaty of Lircay to stop the fighting. This decision caused a major feud with José Miguel Carrera, who led a coup to overthrow the government.

The conflict reached a breaking point at the Battle of Rancagua in October 1814.

O'Higgins and his forces were surrounded by the Spanish army led by Mariano Osorio. The battle lasted an entire day. O'Higgins eventually managed to break through the enemy lines with a few men. Following this defeat, O'Higgins and other patriots were forced into exile. They fled to Argentina, where they remained for three years. During this time, O'Higgins met the Argentine General José de San Martín. The two men were both members of the Lautaro Lodge. They began planning a way to return to Chile and complete the revolution.

In 1817, O'Higgins and San Martín led a successful campaign to reclaim Chile.

They achieved a major victory at the Battle of Chacabuco. During this battle, O'Higgins led 1,500 troops in a charge. This action was part of a larger effort to overwhelm the Spanish positions. The victory helped secure the path toward a truly independent nation. O'Higgins and San Martín worked closely to coordinate their military strategies. Their partnership was essential to the success of the Patriot forces. This period marked the transition from colonial rule to national sovereignty.

The legacy of Bernardo O'Higgins is visible throughout Chile today. He is honored as a primary architect of the Chilean state. His leadership helped establish the political foundations of the country. The struggle he led connected Chile to broader movements across Latin America. His life shows how individual choices and organized groups can change the course of history. He remains a symbol of the fight for self-determination and national identity.
