She was the first woman to lead the agency for a long time. She served as director from 2018 to 2021.

Haspel joined the CIA in 1985. She worked in many places like Turkey and Europe. In 2002, she was a leader at a secret prison in Thailand.

This prison used torture on people. One way used was waterboarding. Some people in the government said these ways were legal at that time.

Haspel also helped destroy 92 videos of these acts. She said she did this to protect the names of CIA officers. Many leaders had strong feelings about her work. Some said her past was wrong. Others said she was smart and effective.

Haspel told the Senate she did not believe torture works. She promised to lead the CIA the right way.
