Gilles de Rais was a prominent French knight and nobleman during the 15th century.

He held many titles and controlled vast territories in western France. His lands included parts of Brittany, Anjou, Poitou, Maine, and Angoumois. This wide network made him one of the most powerful lords in the region. His influence came from his connection to several great feudal houses. He was a member of the House of Laval and the House of Craon.

These lineages provided him with immense wealth and political standing.

His early life was marked by significant family shifts and legal complexities. He was likely born around 1405 at Champtocé castle.

His parents were Marie de Craon and Guy de Laval-Rais. After his father died in 1415, Gilles and his brother René became orphans. Their maternal grandfather, Jean de Craon, took charge of their inheritance. This arrangement bypassed the original will of their father. Gilles eventually obtained the seigneury of La Suze in 1434. This inheritance helped solidify his position as a major landowner.

As a young man, Gilles was a significant figure in the Hundred Years' War. He fought to support King Charles VII of France against the English. In 1429, he achieved the high rank of Marshal of France. This honor followed successful military campaigns alongside the famous Joan of Arc.

While he was a comrade-in-arms to Joan, little is known of their personal relationship. He also worked closely with his cousin, Georges de La Trémoille. Georges served as the Grand Chamberlain of France. Together, they helped advance the cause of the French monarchy.

His personal life was often complicated by legal and religious disputes. Gilles married Catherine de Thouars, but the union faced immediate problems. Because they were fourth-degree relatives, the Church declared their marriage incestuous.

They had to undergo a formal investigation and penance to regularize their status. After 1422, the Church allowed them to marry with great ceremony. This marriage helped link Gilles to the influential House of Thouars. They had one child together, a daughter named Marie, born around 1433.

Despite this, Gilles engaged in aggressive family disputes to expand his control over local castles.

During the 1430s, Gilles began to experience a sharp decline in his social standing. He spent his wealth on extremely lavish expenses. This profligacy led his family to accuse him of squandering his patrimony. In July 1435, King Charles VII placed him under an interdict.

This was a serious legal and religious sanction. His troubles with authority grew in May 1440 when he seized a local castle. He also assaulted a high-ranking cleric at the church of Saint-Étienne-de-Mer-Morte. These actions violated ecclesiastical immunity and undermined the authority of the Duke of Brittany.

In late 1440, Gilles faced a dual legal process involving both church and state. He was arrested on 15 September 1440. An ecclesiastical court, assisted by the Inquisition, tried him for heresy and sodomy. They also charged him with the murder of 140 or more children.

Simultaneously, a secular court of the ducal justice tried him for his violent acts. He was condemned to be hanged and burned at the stake. On 26 October 1440, Gilles and two servants were sent to the scaffold.

Most historians believe the evidence of his guilt was overwhelming.

His legacy has been interpreted in several ways by later generations. Since the early 19th century, people have often confused him with the mythical Bluebeard. Some suggest he may have inspired Charles Perrault's 1697 fairy tale.

In modern times, criminologists sometimes view him through the lens of a serial killer. However, some scholars argue this label is anachronistic for the 15th century. Medievalists like Claude Gauvard suggest we must study the trial's specific procedures. They examine how inquisitorial questioning and public rumors shaped the case. This careful study helps us understand the intersection of law, religion, and history.
