He spent his life studying culture. Culture is the art and ways of a group of people.

In the past, many people thought only opera or ballet were high art. Seldes did not agree. He loved popular things like jazz, comics, and films. He thought these things showed the true spirit of America. He praised the skill of performers in jazz. He even called the cartoonist George Herriman a great artist.

Seldes worked in many ways. He was an editor for a magazine called The Dial. He also worked in radio and on TV. He even led a school for communication. He wanted all people to have access to good art. He called this cultural democracy. This means art should be for everyone, not just a few.

Later in life, he worried about mass culture. He thought TV and radio might make people passive. He did not want people to just watch without thinking. He hoped people would still judge what they saw. He wanted them to find their own taste in art.
