This narrow passage is known as the Strait of Gibraltar. The landscape is defined by the huge Rock of Gibraltar.

It is a place where the land and the sea meet in a very busy way.

Life in Gibraltar is shaped by its unique geography. Because it sits by the Strait, half of the world's sea trade passes through these waters.

The local economy relies on things like the port, tourism, and financial services.

Many people also work in online gambling. The town is quite crowded, with around 34,000 people living there.

Most residents are Gibraltarians. They often speak Spanish or a local dialect called Llanito. Many workers actually live in nearby Spain and travel to Gibraltar for jobs.

History has been written all over this rocky coast. Very long ago, Neanderthals lived in the local caves.

Later, groups like the Phoenicians and Romans saw the area as a holy place. In 1160, the Almohads built a permanent settlement and a castle.

The name "Gibraltar" actually comes from the Arabic name for the mountain. It was called Jabal Ṭāriq, which means "the Mount of Tariq." This name honors a leader named Tariq ibn Ziyad. He led an expedition from North Africa in the year 711.

Control of the territory changed many times through wars. In 1704, Anglo-Dutch forces captured the town from Spain.

Later, the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 gave control to Great Britain forever. This made Gibraltar a vital base for the Royal Navy. It was very important during the Napoleonic Wars and World War II.

During the second war, the Rock was strengthened to act as a fortress. The naval base helped supply the island of Malta during its long siege.

Today, Gibraltar remains a special place with deep ties to its neighbors. Even though it is British, it keeps close economic links with Spain.

People have voted many times to stay under British rule. In 1967 and 2002, residents rejected ideas to share control with Spain. The area is also a mix of many different cultures. You can see this in the various places of worship, like the Hindu Temple or the Mosque.

It is a small territory, but it holds a very big place in world history.
