Earthquakes play a big role in how Geysir works. Shaking in the ground can make the spring erupt more often. In 1896, an earthquake caused it to erupt many times a day. This spring is special because it shoots boiling water high into the air. Scientists believe the Geysir we see today began forming around 1150 CE. How does this amazing thing work? It is a hot water pool geyser. Deep underground, there are branches and cavities. The water in these spaces gets very hot. A narrow part called a conduit holds the water. This conduit has a diameter between 10 and 20 meters. Near the top, the water reaches temperatures near 100 degrees Celsius. Heat comes from the Haukadalur volcanic system nearby. The water might even come from the Langjökull ice sheet to the north. When the water gets hot enough, it erupts out of the funnel-shaped surface.

People have studied Geysir for a long time. A writer named Saxo Grammaticus mentioned a geyser there in his work finished around 1206. In 1811, a geologist named George Mackenzie explained how steam makes it work. Later, a German chemist named Robert Bunsen studied it in 1846. His measurements showed how high the water could go. In 1882, a survey found that a booming sound often warns of an eruption. These early studies helped us understand how these natural features work today.

Geysir's activity changes with the earth. Earthquakes often make the geyser erupt more often. In 1896, an earthquake caused it to erupt several times a day. In 2000, another earthquake revived it. During those two days, it reached 122 meters high. This made it one of the highest geysers ever recorded. In 1935, a man-made channel was dug through the silica rim.
