To make this breed, a man named Max von Stephanitz used many different German herding dogs. He started this work in 1899. He wanted to create the perfect working dog. He looked for dogs with speed, strength, and a keen sense of smell. In 1899, he saw a dog named Hektor Linksrhein at a show. This dog was strong, loyal, and beautiful. Von Stephanitz bought him right away.

He changed the dog's name to Horand von Grafrath. Horand became the very first dog in the breed's official register.

Building the breed took many careful steps. Horand was bred with other dogs that had good traits. This helped the breed grow quickly. By 1923, there were 50,000 members in the German Shepherd Society. Breeders used inbreeding to make sure the dogs kept their special skills. This means they bred certain dogs together to fix specific traits. Many modern German Shepherds can trace their family line back to pups from this time.

This helped make the breed very consistent.

These dogs have had many different names over time. In the UK, they were often called Alsatians. This name came from a region near France and Germany. People used the name Alsatian for fifty years. In 1977, breeders worked hard to change the name back to German Shepherd. The breed became very famous after World War I. Soldiers told stories about how helpful they were.

According to the Fédération Cynologique Internationale, they had the second-highest annual registrations in 2013.\n\nThe breed's development was driven by a desire for standardized working traits. In the 1890s, shepherds in Germany bred dogs to protect flocks from predators. However, these dogs varied greatly in appearance and ability across different localities. To solve this, the Phylax Society formed in 1891 to create development plans. The society disbanded after three years due to internal conflicts. Some members wanted to breed for work, while others focused on appearance. This struggle inspired others to pursue standardization independently.\n\nMax von Stephanitz, an ex-cavalry captain, became the true architect of the breed. He believed dogs should be bred primarily for their ability to work. In 1899, he saw a dog named Hektor Linksrhein at a dog show. Hektor possessed the strength, intelligence, and loyalty von Stephanitz sought. He purchased the dog and renamed him Horand von Grafrath.

Horand became the first dog in the breed's official register. Von Stephanitz then founded the Verein für Deutsche Schäferhunde to manage the breed.\n\nTo fix specific traits, early breeders used a process called inbreeding. This means they bred related dogs to ensure certain characteristics were passed on. Horand was bred with dogs from Thuringia, Franconia, and Württemberg. One of his most prolific offspring was Hektor von Schwaben. Hektor was inbred with another of Horand's offspring to produce dogs like Heinz von Starkenburg. These lines eventually produced Beowulf, whose descendants provide a genetic link for all modern German Shepherds.

By 1923, the society had 50,000 dues-paying members in over 500 German branches.\n\nThe breed's name has changed due to international politics. Originally, the name translated to \"German Shepherd Dog.\" After World War I, the word \"German\" was avoided in some countries to prevent unpopularity. The UK Kennel Club renamed them \"Alsatian Wolf Dog\" after the Alsace region.

Eventually, the \"wolf dog\" label was dropped to protect the breed's reputation. In 1977, British enthusiasts successfully campaigned to use the name German Shepherd again. In the United States, the breed reached the second most popular spot in 2016.\n\nA German Shepherd has a very specific physical structure. They are longer than they are tall, with an ideal proportion of 10 to 4.
