He studies how the tiniest parts of our world work. He is a theoretical physicist. This means he uses math to understand nature.

As a young boy, Gerard loved math. He even won a silver medal in a math contest. Later, he went to Utrecht University. There, he studied with a teacher named Martinus Veltman. They worked together on a big problem. They used a way called dimensional regularization to solve it. This helped them understand how particles act. Their work was so important that they won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1999.

Gerard has studied many things. He looks at black holes and how gravity works. He also studies quantum mechanics. This is the study of how tiny things move. He even found things called magnetic monopoles. These are special objects in physics. An asteroid was named after him to show respect. He is still a great teacher today.
