He served as the President of France from 1969 until 1974. Before he was President, he was the Prime Minister. He worked closely with a leader named Charles de Gaulle. Pompidou was born on July 5, 1911, in a place called Montboudif. His family were farmers with very little money. He worked hard in school to change his life. This is a great example of how school can help people succeed.

Pompidou had many different jobs before he led the country. First, he studied literature and became a teacher. Later, he worked at a big bank called Rothschild. In 1953, he began working for a man named Guy de Rothschild. He later helped manage a foundation for a leader's daughter. In 1962, he became the Prime Minister of France. He held this job for a long time. He was the longest-serving Prime Minister in the history of the Fifth Republic.

As a leader, Pompidou wanted to make France a modern nation. He helped start many big projects for the country. He worked on the TGV, which is a very fast train. He also helped with new planes and nuclear power. His government spent money on cars and steel. He helped create a minimum wage called the SMIC. This was a way to help workers earn enough money. He even started a special group to help the environment.

Pompidou also worked hard to connect France with the rest of the world. He had good relations with the United States and President Richard Nixon. He also spoke with leaders in the Soviet Union. One big thing he did was help the United Kingdom join the European Community. This happened on January 1, 1973. He also visited many countries in Africa to help them cooperate. He wanted to build strong ties with many different nations.

Pompidou was also a huge fan of modern art. He wanted to build a special museum in Paris. This museum is called the Centre Pompidou.
