He was a thinker who helped shape how the United States government works. Mason was born in the colony of Virginia in 1725. His family had lived in the area for many years. His great-grandfather came from England a long time ago. Mason grew up in a place where most people lived near rivers.

These rivers helped people trade goods like tobacco with the rest of the world.

Life was not always easy for young Mason. When he was only nine years old, his father died in a boat accident. A storm hit the Potomac River and tipped his father's boat over.

After that, Mason's mother took care of the family lands. Mason studied with different teachers to learn many things. He learned from books and from talking to smart people. He later became a successful landowner and built a large home. This home was called Gunston Hall.

He also helped lead the local militia as a colonel. Mason was a very busy man who managed many large farms. He married Ann Eilbeck in 1750, and they had nine children. He even tried to help start a new industry by growing wine grapes. He worked with other famous people like Thomas Jefferson to do this.

Mason is most famous for his writing during the American Revolution. In 1776, he wrote the Virginia Declaration of Rights.

This document listed the rights that all people should have. In 1787, he went to Philadelphia for a big meeting. This meeting was to write the United States Constitution.

Mason was one of only three people who refused to sign it. He did not sign because the document did not have a bill of rights. He also wanted to stop the slave trade right away.

Even though Mason did not sign the Constitution, his ideas won in the end. His fight for rights inspired James Madison to help create the Bill of Rights.

These important rules were added to the government in 1791. This was just one year before Mason died in 1792. For a long time, many people forgot about his hard work. Now, people recognize him as a father of American rights. His ideas still help guide our country today.
