Grey went to school in England. He later joined the military in 1829. In 1837, he led a group to explore North-West Australia. The trip was very hard for his team. They faced boat wrecks and even got lost. During one fight, Grey was speared in the hip.

In 1841, Grey became the Governor of South Australia. He arrived when the colony had many money problems. The previous leader had spent a lot of money on building things. Grey worked to cut spending and fix the finances. He also passed the Aboriginal Witnesses Act in 1844. This law meant that unsworn testimony from Aboriginal people could not be used in court. This made it hard to use their evidence in legal cases.

He had a good relationship with the leader Pōtatau Te Wherowhero. However, things changed when Grey returned to New Zealand later. He struggled to keep peace between the British and the Māori people.

Later in his life, Grey's actions led to serious conflict. He was part of the British push for control over the land. In 1863, he started the Invasion of the Waikato. This was a war against Māori groups. About 14,000 British and colonial troops attacked 4,000 Māori and their families.
