Gentrification is a big change that happens in cities.

It is a process where more money is invested in a neighborhood. This often makes property values and rents go up. When prices rise, people with lower incomes may find they can no longer afford to live there. This is called displacement. It can change the whole character and feel of a neighborhood. Many people talk about this in politics and city planning.

This process usually follows a specific pattern of change. First, people with higher incomes move into an area. They might come from nearby cities or other neighborhoods. Next, real estate developers and local governments might invest in the area. They might build new buildings or improve the roads and paths. This can bring in new businesses like shops and restaurants. Some studies show that crime rates might even go down for a short time. However, these changes can also lead to a new social hierarchy.

People have studied these changes for a long time. Historians say something similar happened in ancient Rome. In Roman Britain, large villas replaced small shops by the 3rd century CE. The word "gentrification" comes from the word "gentry." This term used to describe people of gentle birth. In 1964, a British sociologist named Ruth Glass used the word in a new way. She used it to describe how middle-class people moved into working-class districts in London. Her most famous example was a place called Islington.

There are many different reasons why this happens. Some people move to cities because they want to live near work. Others might want to live near public transit or cultural attractions. In the United States, some studies show that gentrification affects renters more than homeowners. A 2018 study found this was true. In Vancouver, Canada, the demolition of Hogan's Alley in the 1960s displaced a Black community. This shows how these changes can impact specific groups of people. Different experts have different ideas about why these shifts occur.

Today, leaders try to balance growth with fairness. Some governments use "social mix policies" to help neighborhoods stay diverse. They want to avoid concentrating poverty in just one area. However, research shows that gentrification does not always lead to social mixing. It can sometimes make community ties weaker instead of stronger. People often debate if this is a natural cycle of city growth. Some see it as urban revitalization, while others see it as a struggle. It remains a very important topic for the future of our cities.
