Luigi "Geno" Auriemma is a highly influential American basketball coach. He is the head coach of the UConn Huskies women's basketball team. Since taking the position in 1985, he has transformed the program. Before his arrival, the Huskies had only one winning season in their history. Today, the team is a dominant force in college sports. Auriemma holds several NCAA records. These include the most total wins and the highest winning percentage for a coach with at least ten seasons.

Auriemma's coaching success is defined by many impressive statistics. He has led UConn to 12 NCAA Division I championships. This is a record in college basketball. He has also guided the team to 19 undefeated conference seasons. This includes a stretch of eight consecutive undefeated seasons. His teams have achieved massive winning streaks. One notable streak reached 111 consecutive wins between 2014 and 2017. In 2010, he led the team to 89 straight victories. This surpassed the previous men's NCAA record of 88 wins held by UCLA.

The process of building this program began with a specific decision by the University of Connecticut. The school wanted to better fund women's sports. They hired Auriemma in August 1985. He was the final candidate interviewed by the search staff. Interestingly, many other candidates were highly qualified women. One of those women was Chris Dailey. She eventually became his assistant and is now the associate head coach. After a first season with a 12–15 record, the team began a period of rapid growth. They quickly achieved their first 20-win season and their first NCAA Tournament appearance.

Auriemma's personal history shaped his journey to the top of the sport. He was born on March 23, 1954, in Montella, Italy. When he was seven, his family emigrated to Norristown, Pennsylvania. His family lived in poverty, and his parents worked low-wage factory jobs. Auriemma had to teach himself English upon arriving in the United States. He later graduated from West Chester University in 1977. In 1994, at age 40, he became a naturalized United States citizen. He did this because his team was scheduled to tour Italy, and he wanted to avoid potential issues regarding national service.

His career milestones are often reached faster than any other coach in history. He won his 600th game in 716 games. He reached 700 wins in 822 games, which was the fastest rate in college basketball history. He also reached 800, 900, and 1,200 wins with record-breaking speed. By the end of the 2023–24 season, his career record stood at 1,217 wins and 162 losses. This resulted in an 88.2 percent winning percentage. This is the highest winning percentage among all active Division I coaches.

Beyond the college level, Auriemma has achieved great success with the United States women's national team. He served as their head coach from 2009 through 2016. During this time, he won the 2010 and 2014 World Championships. He also led the team to gold medals at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics. His ability to coach elite players is evident in his roster. He has coached 13 multiple-All-America players. These athletes include stars like Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, and Maya Moore. These players have collectively won many prestigious awards, such as the Naismith College Player of the Year and the Wade Trophy.

Auriemma's career has also included notable rivalries and moments of controversy. He had a famous rivalry with Pat Summitt, the coach of the Tennessee Lady Vols. While they were often at odds in the media, they mended their relationship later. Auriemma donated $10,000 to her Alzheimer's foundation after her diagnosis. He also had a competitive relationship with former UConn coach Jim Calhoun. In 1998, Auriemma faced controversy regarding a planned play to help a player break a scoring record. Despite these complexities, his focus on player development remains a core part of his legacy. UConn also emphasizes education, as many players have graduated with degrees under his leadership.
