Stewart is celebrated for her ability to dominate a game through scoring, rebounding, and defense. Her career is defined by a consistent ability to win championships at every level of competition.

Stewart developed her elite skill set through a disciplined and unique training routine. Because of her height, many coaches initially wanted her to play only as a rebounder near the basket. However, her father encouraged her to master ball handling and perimeter shooting. To achieve this, she began a daily routine of dribbling for one mile around her block while wearing headphones. This repetitive practice allowed her to master complex moves, such as dribbling behind her back or between her legs.

This technical foundation made her a versatile threat on both ends of the court.

Her journey began in Syracuse, New York, where she was born in 1994. She was raised by her mother, Heather Baldwin, until she was adopted by Brian Stewart. During her youth, Stewart faced significant personal challenges, including being a victim of sexual abuse between the ages of 9 and 11. She courageously reported the abuse to her parents, which led to the perpetrator serving prison time. Stewart later shared this experience publicly in a 2017 essay in The Players' Tribune.

At Cicero–North Syracuse High School, Stewart emerged as a dominant force in prep basketball. She played for head coach Eric Smith and earned the nickname "6–10" due to her impressive wingspan. During her junior year, she averaged 24 points and 15 rebounds per game, leading her team to a state AA public school title.

Her high school success included winning the Naismith High School Girls' Player of the Year and the Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year awards. She also proved her talent in national showcases like the Nike Tournament of Champions and the Hoophall Classic.

Stewart's collegiate career at the University of Connecticut (UConn) is considered legendary. She led the Huskies to four consecutive national championships, a feat achieved by the first such class in NCAA history.

During her time at UConn, she became the first player to be named the Final Four's Most Outstanding Player four times. She finished her college career with 2,676 points, which ranked second on the school's all-time scoring list. Remarkably, she is the first NCAA player to ever record at least 400 assists and 400 blocked shots.

In the professional ranks, Stewart has maintained her status as a premier global talent. She was selected as the first overall pick in the 2016 WNBA draft and immediately won the Rookie of the Year award.

Her excellence extends to international play, where she has won two EuroLeague Women championships and national league titles in Russia and Türkiye.

Stewart's impact is perhaps most visible through her success with the United States women's national team. She has won three Olympic gold medals in 2016, 2020, and 2024. Additionally, she has captured three FIBA World Cup titles in 2014, 2018, and 2022.
