The city grew because of its important harbor. In the early 1900s, it was just a small place for fishing. By 1910, only about 895 people lived there. The Polish government wanted a major seaport they could control. They started building the port in 1921. Work moved slowly at first due to money problems. However, things sped up after 1926. By 1938, Gdynia was the largest and most modern seaport on the Baltic Sea.

For many years, different groups ruled the region. This included the Teutonic Order and the Kingdom of Poland. In 1772, the Kingdom of Prussia took control. They called the city Gdingen for a time. By 1789, the village was so small it had only 21 houses.

During World War II, Gdynia went through a very difficult period. German forces invaded Poland in September 1939. They captured the city on September 14. The occupiers stayed until 1945 and renamed the city Gotenhafen. Many Polish people were arrested or killed during this occupation. This included teachers, priests, and students. In 1940, ten people from Gdynia were also killed in the Katyn massacre.
