He lived during a time of big changes in Russia. Many people think of him as a master of classicism. This means his work followed certain formal styles. However, his best poems were very special and unique. They used many different sounds and contrasting ideas. This made his writing feel alive and full of energy. He was one of the most respected poets before Alexander Pushkin.

His life started with many hard jobs and struggles. He was born in 1743 in the Kazan region. His family belonged to the nobility but had very little money. They once held many lands along the Myosha River. Over time, these lands were sold or lost. His father, Roman, was a soldier who married Fyokla Gorina. They had a difficult life with neighbors fighting over land. Even as a young child, Gavrila faced many challenges.

Learning was a very important part of his journey. He began learning to read and write at age three. Local churchmen taught him because his mother could not read. Later, he studied in Orenburg at a school for noble children. A teacher named Joseph Rose taught them the German language. In 1758, he went to a new school in Kazan. This school was very interesting for students. It taught subjects like Latin, French, and even fencing. They even performed plays by famous writers like Molière.

Derzhavin worked his way up through many important roles. He started his career as a common soldier in the army. He served in the Preobrazhensky Regiment, which protected the royal family. Later, he moved into civil service jobs for the government. He served as the governor of Olonets and Tambov. He even became the Minister of Justice in 1802.

He also worked closely with Empress Catherine the Great. His ideas about laws helped shape new rules in Russia.

As a writer, he loved to notice the small things. Most poets wrote about very grand or serious topics. Derzhavin liked to write about his daily meals. He might even describe the color of his wallpaper. He wrote grand odes, which are long poems of praise. One famous poem was called "God," written in 1785. He also wrote the lyrics for a national anthem.

His rich and colorful style still influences writers today. Even modern poets have looked to his work for inspiration.
