Galilean transformation

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

In the study of physics, a Galilean transformation is a mathematical tool used to switch between different views of the same event. These views are called reference frames. A reference frame is a coordinate system used to measure where things are and when they happen. Galilean transformations work when two frames are moving at a constant speed relative to each other. This method exists within the framework of Newtonian physics. It allows scientists to translate the position and time of an event from one observer's perspective to another.

The mechanism of these transformations relies on the addition and subtraction of velocities. In this system, space and time are treated as absolute. This means time passes at the same rate for every observer, regardless of their motion. To move between frames, the transformation uses several specific actions. First, it uses translations, which are shifts in space or time. Second, it uses rotations, which turn the coordinate system around a point. Finally, it uses uniform motion, or boosts, which account for the constant velocity between the frames.

These actions are organized into a mathematical structure called the inhomogeneous Galilean group. This group acts on four dimensions: the three dimensions of space and one dimension of time. The group can be broken down into several distinct subgroups. One subgroup handles rotations, known as the SO(3) group. Another handles shifts of origin, which are translations in Newtonian spacetime. There are also isochronous transformations, which keep time constant. By combining these subgroups, scientists can describe any motion within the Galilean framework.

The history of these ideas begins with Galileo Galilei. He formulated these concepts while studying uniform motion. One of his key experiments involved watching a ball roll down a ramp. Through this observation, he was able to measure the acceleration of gravity near the Earth's surface. While the transformations bear his name, they rely on the concept of absolute space and time. This concept was later established by Isaac Newton. Newton's work provides the domain of definition for these mathematical rules.

Mathematically, the Galilean group is quite complex. It is a continuous group with a dimension of 10. This means there are ten different parameters that define the transformations. In the language of linear algebra, the transformation can be described as a shear mapping. This is often represented using a matrix, which is a grid of numbers. Using matrices allows physicists to compare Galilean transformations directly to more advanced methods. For example, scientists can use matrix multiplication to compose two different transformations into a single one.

It is important to understand the limits of this mathematical model. Galilean transformations are only physically valid in a Newtonian framework. They do not work for objects moving at speeds approaching the speed of light. For those extreme speeds, physicists must use Lorentz transformations instead. However, there is a deep connection between these two ideas. In a process called group contraction, the Poincaré transformations of special relativity turn into Galilean transformations in the classical limit. This means Galilean math is a simplified version of the rules that govern the universe at high speeds.

The study of the Galilean group also connects to advanced theoretical physics. Scientists look at the Lie algebra of the group to understand its fundamental properties. This algebra is spanned by generators like the Hamiltonian for time translations and the momentum operator. There is also a special extension called the Bargmann algebra. This is created by adding a new operator to the system. These complex mathematical structures help researchers understand the deep symmetries of the physical world.
