How we see the world depends on where we are.

A Galilean transformation is a way to link different views of the same event. Imagine two people watching a ball. One person stands on the grass. The other person sits on a moving train. They will see the ball's position differently. This math helps us change one person's coordinates into the other's. It works within the rules of Newtonian physics. This framework helps us understand how things move in space and time. It is a key part of how we describe motion.

This way of working follows a specific set of steps. It uses things called translations and rotations to change a view. A translation means moving the starting point in space or time. A rotation means turning the view around a point. It also includes uniform motion, which is steady movement at a constant speed.

These parts work together to form what scientists call the Galilean group. This group acts on the four dimensions of our world. These dimensions are the three directions of space and one direction of time. By combining these steps, we can switch between any two steady views.

Galileo Galilei first thought about these ideas long ago. He was interested in how objects move. He watched a ball roll down a ramp to study motion. This helped him measure how gravity pulls things toward Earth.

Later, Isaac Newton built on these ideas. Newton's ideas about absolute space and time define how these transformations work. In this view, time is the same for everyone. It does not change just because you are moving. This makes time a constant part of the math. It is a very intuitive way to think about the world.

There are many specific details in this math. The Galilean group has ten dimensions.

It can be broken down into smaller parts called subgroups. Some parts handle rotations, while others handle shifts in where we start. These are called isochronous or spatial Euclidean transformations. Scientists even use matrices to represent these changes. A matrix is a grid of numbers used in math. Using matrices allows for easy comparisons to other types of physics. This makes the math very organized and precise.

Most of what we see in daily life follows these rules. If you are running or riding a bike, these rules work well.

However, these rules have a limit. They do not work for things moving near the speed of light. For those very fast things, we must use Lorentz transformations instead. In the classical limit, the math of those fast things turns back into Galilean math. This means Galileo's ideas are like a simpler version of more complex rules. They provide a wonderful starting point for understanding our moving world.
