geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Galata Tower is in Istanbul, Turkey. It sits in the Beyoğlu part of the city. This tall tower has nine floors. Long ago, it was a watchtower. It stood on high walls. In 1348, it was the tallest building in the city. It was called the Tower of Christ back then.

Many things have happened to the tower. Fires once hurt the building. A big storm even broke the roof in 1875. The tower was also used as a prison. A story says a man named Hezarfen Ahmed Çelebi flew from the roof. He used wings to fly to the Asian side of the city.

Today, the tower is a museum. People visit to see the view. You can see all around the city from the top. Workers have worked hard to fix the tower. They made the walls strong to help with earthquakes. They also built a tunnel to keep visitors safe. The tower reopened to the public in May 2024. Now, only 100 people can enter every hour.
