The city sits on the west bank of the Danube. This river is the second longest in Europe. Two other rivers join the Danube near the city. The Siret river flows in from the west. The Prut river flows in from the east. These junctions change the river's strength. The flow increases significantly after these rivers join. The Danube has high seasonal variation in its flow. The maximum flow occurs in May. The minimum flow happens during the summer.

Galați has a history that stretches back to the Neolithic period.

Archaeologists found ceramic fragments and bone tools in the area. Later, an ancient Dacian settlement grew near a river ford. The Romans eventually conquered the area. They built a strong fortress at Barboși to defend the ford. The city saw continuous inhabitation from the 600s onward. Evidence includes a Byzantine treasure hoard of 12 silver coins. At one point, the city was part of the Republic of Genoa. It was then known by the name "Caladda."

Trade drove the city's growth during the 19th century.

The United States opened a consulate in 1858. In 1837, the city was declared a free port. This status helped ships from German lands arrive regularly. The city also modernized with new infrastructure. The King Charles I railway station opened in 1872.

During the interwar period, Galați was Romania's fifth-largest city. The 1930 census recorded 100,000 residents. However, World War II caused great destruction. The city was bombed by the Soviet Air Forces and the Luftwaffe. The railway station and the old town were destroyed. After the war, the city was rebuilt along communist lines. In 1960, construction began on the massive steel works. This plant opened in 1966 and changed the city's economy.
